I have not read the books yet or anything, only played the games and watched the terminals :P
That is just what Vien told me. He said the Flood on the Halo rings were like specimens or something they were studying.

They are. The Flood originated from an unknown galaxy. What's in the Milky Way is just a small portion.

Depression sucks. Also, don't bother reading the Cryptum trilogy; ridiculously dull read. It'd be better if you were to read about it on a wiki or something.
