After having played destiny for a good few weeks (Bungie shows a good six and a half or so days of in-game time), I felt driven to write up a critique on its major failings. These are both from my personal experiences and the experiences I've read online from others. This is a two part critique on the areas I feel Bungie has failed the most, though they result in the same thing.
But before I begin, I'd like to say that Destiny is a good game.
It's just that it could have been so much more...
Destiny: become legend. Or rather, Destiny: become whatever is given to you and feel grateful. When I first went through the story, everything was new and somewhat exciting, but not only that, everything was different. Guns ran through my hands like water, and I experienced a wide variety of perks and stats and looks. But when I reached level 20, this all came to a halt. Guns no longer ran thorugh my hands. Instead, I was devoid of anything new, anything likable.
Eventually, I found Xur, the Vanguard store, and the factions, and I began my quest to become like everyone else. The armor didn't have stats I liked, but I needed the light. They didn't have the perks I wanted, but I needed the light. It was going to take weeks to earn the marks to buy them, but I needed the light.
At first, I didn't upgrade any of the vanguard pieces because I hated them. I held onto my energies and shards like scrooge with his precious gold, but in the end: I needed the light.
By now, I've become much more pliable: I don't scrimp my ascendent materials, because more likely than not, what I want is never going to happen.
Destiny has turned me into a pessimist.
Whatever happened to "Become Legend?"
Look at the legends in game.
Kabr refused to be bowed down, and ripped the face off of a Gorgon to make a shield. What a guy.
Toland pursued knowledge to the bitter end, eventually going mad.
Dredgen Yor felt darkness embracing him, and decided to embrace it back.
Me? I'm a nobody. A nobody in a sea of nobodies doing nobody things and buying nobody items. We run the same nobody quests and strikes and turn in the same nobody bounties. We're not legends: we're nobodies.
When I look at my fellow warlocks, I see my face on every one. The one who molded my character molded each and every one of them, and we all look the same and use the same weapons.
Everyone wears the voidfang vestments nowadays. There's no reason not to, and more likely than not, it's one of the few exotics they've had the chance to own.
Guns? They're so rare, just like the armor. You either buy what Xur is selling or buy from a faction.
End of story.
You're "Legend."
I don't feel legend.
I don't feel unique.
I feel empty.
Which leads to my second point, which is the fullness of Destiny. No, this is not about the story.
This is about the dichotomy of what I have been told and what truly is.
They tell me that we are on the losing side. Earth, Mars, Venus, the Moon, the rest of the known universe: all are held in a stranglehold by the darkness.
The earth is empty. The moon is calm.
Where is the chaos?
Where is the overwhelming darkness?
Where is the need for guardians?
Patrol feels so empty. I stroll through the hive for no reason. I collect spinmetal plants under gunfire because I simply don't care. If they tell me Mr. Nexus has overstayed his welcome on Venus, I deliver an eviction notice. Aksor broke his curfew? Reign him back in. The Psions got out? Put a belt to their backside.
A phrase comes to mind "Born too late to explore the world, too early to explore the universe."
This is what playing destiny feels like. The fall seems so interesting, but it's over and done. People like Kabr and Toland and Dredgen played their parts.
On the flipside, the impending darkness is too far away to be dealt with, too remote to encounter.
Our guardians live in a time of peace, striving not to survive, but to simply find adventure wherever they can. Guardians are not legends: they are bored.
Strikes are boring. The dailies are boring. Patrol is boring. In the end, you do your weekly, your nightfall, your dailies, your raid, and your farming, and that's it. Evil doesn't care, and neither do you. You're both just going through the motions.
The fallen aren't actually maintining strength on earth, they just want to look like it. The hive don't actually care about the moon, they just felt like building a fortress. The cabal don't really care that you're on mars, they just get their jollies from shooting off explosives. You're not really in a struggle for your life against the forces of darkness, you're just doing whatever you feel like.
Where are the front lines to this great battle? Commander, send me to the front! I want action! I want to feel like I'm making a difference in this universe! I don't want to be an errand boy any longer! I don't want to post any more eviction notices!
But there is no war.
There is only mundanity and repitition. There is a faceless darkness that is halfheartedly taking over the universe. It will take over the last bastion of men not by force, but by boring us to death.
Conclusion:
I am a nobody being bored to death by a faceless entity. I'm the futuristic, space magic-ey equivalent of a man-child in his grandma's basement thinking he's sticking it to the man.
In reality, I'm doing nothing, and the man doesn't care.
I want to feel like I am the master of my own destiny, not like I'm living off the charity of Lakshmi (though she is very charitable, and I love her for it) and Lord Saladin (ty for the boots and gloves m8, appreciate it). I want to feel like the darkness truly is trying to destroy mankind, not like it's sitting on its respective planets, sipping martinis.
I want to feel not only like I'm making a difference, but that there's a difference that needs to be made.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Good post, well said

Brilliantly said, now add to this feeling of ennui the actual game mechanics. Direct quote from Bungie: “The Director is light on details for the Raid in Destiny. This is by design. The most elaborate mission ever created by Bungie is a mystery as much as it is a challenge – a puzzle and a gauntlet.” It’s bugged to hell and the usual reward…Chatterwhite, Energy, Shards…yawn! Why bother? In order to run co-op effectively you NEED solid and reliable comms, another quote from Bungie: “Communicate with each other. The Raid will demand that you operate as a team. Cooperation is the key to your success.” Since the last update, the Party Chat feature on the XBone causes huge frame rate issues, result…use in-game chat which also has issues…thanks for the apology Deej, when is it going to be fixed? Until then keep your co-op! Such swift action on nerfing of weapons and player-devised strategies by Bungie…not so swift action on fixing over nerfs…but at least we get an acknowledgement that it’s a problem…this is a transparent and standard political tactic, it’s also not acceptable…answer the problem and tell us when you are going to fix your errors Bungie. IMO, you have one last chance at redemption, the DLC…treat the DLC the same way that you have ‘adjusted’ the main game and you’ll be lucky to last a year never mind 10!

While I agree with you on some points, I would say that the biggest problem is not making proper use of these giant areas that they have! They have areas that are only used in one "story" mission and uh... Well that's it. Take for instance the subway station in Mars. That place is quite honestly my favorite area in the game. It's the only area where it is truly dark, as if the darkness actually has dominion there. I would LOVE to see there be a strike or just even some type of mission where you fight solely in the dark for 90% of the strike or mission, and hell throw as many enemies as you can at me the entire time! Things like what I've mentioned would add to the diversity of the game in a truly enthralling way.

Ugh. Just .... ugh.

I understand. I am a little sour towards the "it's your destiny" and "become legend thing". How am I supposed to be a legend when my exotics ( of which i have none ) are shared by everyone who bought them from Xur? Wheres the ranking on Multiplayer? How am I supposed to be a legend. There are a few "legends" out there, that have been shown by bungie, but still.
-
You survived where those legends you noted, had failed. I'd say you're pretty bad ass. But we all want to be bad ass, so you're going to have to share. At least until Bungie offers up more customization. I feel your pain though.

Edited by Astro4545: 11/28/2014 12:00:45 AMThe moment I saw you say it was repetitive I ignored you. Also Destiny 2 should be amazing!
BF4 ,CoD, and Halo are even more repetitive.
I don't know if anyone here ever played a game called chromehounds. A mech game, but one where your wins and losses and those of thousands of others made a real difference. Areas (and access to those areas) would be won and lost. Certain series of events would trigger massive enemies, but incredibly rarely. When they popped up you would drop whatever you were doing to get online. I was hoping for something similar with destiny. That in attacking the hive we would weaken it, giving the fallen a chance to take over their territory or perhaps the vex would invade ours. You'd never know what to expect when you patrolled Venus, it might be cabal you run into. When running a strike to the summoning pits under vex control it would be a different boss. Same maps (that we all know so well) but a different experience every time and the feeling that we were important, part of something bigger than a fire team, that we were guardians. Oh, and I want a gjallarhorn

Wow. This wall is so perfect. Destiny fell flat in the epic ness. What happened? I remember when developers said it would be a living world. Instead of asking players if they experienced the same event, I ask them if they grinded the same weapon....
-
Couldn't have said it better myself. At this point i just want the light stat gone. It restricts any form of customization whatsoever. It looks like Bungie didn't learn from the LOTR online devs when they tried to implement a similar light system http://i.massively.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/we-were-wrong-lotro-dev-explains-radiances-failure/

Am I the only one who started liking Destiny from the reveal all the way through Vidocs, WeeklyUpdates, and stalking ever single new thing about Destiny? We were promised a whole new world. I wanna play the real Destiny not marriage!
-
So in a nutshell, Destiny is like marriage?
-
I agree.

the game came out sept 9th right ? today is the 27th of november , right ? the game has been out for just over 2 months . get a grip .........

What I am really dissapointed about is the small world. Is this our solar system? Is this our galaxy? No! There are so many more planets and moons which are fantastic to recreate in a game. I want to experience how it would look like, I want to travel to far planets away! When I first saw Destiny I was excited, becayse I thought it was a game full of planets and moons, I thought I would see massives of people together at the tower... but at level 20 I was shocked... I found out that there were no more planets... I found out this was the worlds you had to deal with. Destiny could be a real Destiny when there is a real space environment and not just Mars-Venus-Moon-Earth. People wanted to play Destiny to explore and experience outerspace! They wanted to feel the epicness on planets where they dream of. People play games to experience these kind of dreams: exploring the galaxy!
-
So true
-
Clearly those other guardians were more powerful than we are. When the traveler wasnt crippled. The speaker goes over this after tge second quest. When the traveler wakes up we will be like those guardians that ripped off the faces of the gorgons

Edited by FrostyOcelot: 11/27/2014 8:37:01 PMLegends dont become legends through legendary gear; they become legend through legendary deeds. Like you said. Kabr. Toland. Dredgen Yor. Do something legendary. Save your team from wiping in a nightfall or raid. Carry a game in crucible. THAT is what "become legend" means. I am so sick of people twisting the meaning of those words. No one is going to make you a legend. Not bungie, not Xur, no one...but you. You want to be a legend? Do something about it then.
-
There was some really cool looking rare gear but if I want to be level 30 I need to wear this raid gear

Oh look, more idiot opinion.

"And we all look just the same."
