Why does the Death Star have that one ridiculous weakness, why not cover it up?
Why do you have to fly through a trench to get to it? Why not just go straight on?

The weakness is not covered because it's an exhaust port. They don't attack the weakness head on because of air defenses.

They could of at least put a grate and some turrets on it.

True, it probably didn't seem like a major weakness at the time.

Good point about the slits. And the trenches are just part of the structure and how it was built. Maybe they didn't need to build any rooms or anything there.
