Farming mats can be done completing bounties and patrol missions, plus pubic events happen, and you get items from chests to upgrade weapons and armor along with other good stuff, plus you get engrams that level up cryptarch rep for possible legendary engrams. There is a lot of things to gain from farming materials, when done right it's pretty rewarding.
