Honestly, I don't get it either. Didn't Xur trade materials? Or am I mistaken (I feel I might be)

you are right you could trade 77 mats for a strange coin at the begunning of the beta

Don't think so, he did sell heavy ammo but they cut that, I took mats to the crucible vendor, just seems pointless them taking it out and pushing ppl into the crucible!
