I'm curious, are people having such a hard time beating him because they want the chest for blocking his teleports? Or are people just having that hard of a time?

Two teams of mine just couldn't do it. Those damn containment fields

Need better communication then. If the relic holder gives notice he's ready to shoot, that gives you time to get rid of most enemies and get out of direct line of sight from the templar. That way, when the containment shields go up, you can excape easy without much of a threat.
