I have done enough strikes that I do not want to spend 45 minutes trying to kill everything prior to the darkness zone. There's no need. Lag behind if you want, but you're going to miss the boss fight.

Staying in public areas are a big no-no. But there ar non-darkness strike areas (with lvl 24 enemies) as well as darkness zones you can just run through. These I will almost always fight through unless I'm forced to move ahead by someone running into the boss fight and dying.
