Don't know if you'll be able to reply but what sort of load out is required for this (other than 26) gear?

For normal it's best just to have maxed out legendary (although not 100% necessary) weapons. Every weapon has their own benefit, but usually you want to go with fusion rifles and rockets. Primary is based on preference.

Damn I'm at 26 with no legendary weapons yet. But I've got armor. How's that work lol
