Factions and exotics help

I'm a lvl 24 hunter and I'm trying to lvl up to get some exotic gear. I started reading about factions other than vanguard and crucible. Does it make sense to join one? Does anyone have tips how I can pick up exotics? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks
