casual vs hardcore
Almost posted this to general forums but realized it would be pointless and troll-able.
So I see this all the time now where players rant about being hardcore and despising casual gamers. I feel it is a major community killer where elitists dismiss others with the casual brand. And its annoying because it always seems subjective as to what defines each group. So I was just sort of curious as to how folks out there define each group.
To me it's not about the time played, the gear someone's collected, or the level of completeness achieved for a game. I think it is all about the passion for the gaming hobby. Just because someone doesn't have a schedule that allows 8 hours a day to game doesn't mean that person is any less "hardcore" if they are genuinely having fun and play hard. And the same goes the other way: a person can play 10 hours a day but if they treat it like a job and don't really play to enjoy the game are they really hardcore, or just people with more time on their hands?
I personally get only about 6-8 hours a week if I'm lucky to really kick back and game. This was different when I was younger and logged 12 hour or more days playing WoW and other games. Now when I do play I play for the enjoyment of playing, just as I did back then. And that is different things in different games. Story in some, competition in others. I play just as hard during my few hours now as I did back then I just have less time to do it. I still consider myself hardcore as i have a strong passion for gaming, but I don't let it rule my life which seems to be the common conception of hardcore.
So what are you folks opinions? How do you define these groups and do you feel that one group should be valued more for the other?

I can relate to where you are coming from - having been a 12+ hour a day wow raider from vanilla wow. That and having been a "gamer" before the hardcore idea I think originally stemmed from those who took their gaming seriously versus say "those bros" or others who thought it child's play. Now though I think it's just kids who worry about terms like "casual" or "hardcore". I mean really, sure, the nightfall is hard but compared to child birth or raising a human! Now that's hardcore!! I can see someone who makes Destiny or other games their thing. They run 3 characters a do the raid and nightfall on all 3. Their lowest alt has better gear than most and they game more in a day than most of us in a week. They take it seriously and wear their accomplishments with pride. I can respect that. But I think spending the day with a headstrong three year old is more impressive. ;) I fall in between. My wife and I regulatory play with a good friend of ours. 2-3 hours a night 4-6 days a week. We've not raided, might never, but we worked to get to doing the nightfalls regularly. We work together to gear up and progress and I'd say we are pretty invested. I'd say that's more than someone who is casual in that they just play whenever for fun and don't really care if they ever see any end game content. Really. If you are having fun, it matters little. In the end, I think it's quality versus quantity and how serious you are. Like with sports. I'm casual about sports. I'll watch if it's on. I like a few players on a few teams, just football. But I don't follow stats or worry if I miss a game. To me that's casual. But if I miss a daily or weekly in Destiny I'm annoyed.

I'd classify myself as a casual player. Like yourself I usually only get 6 to 10 hours a week to play compared to the 12 to 20 hours in the past. It does get frustrating when you meet up with non-DoD players who call themselves "hardcore" and immediately dismiss you or mock you for not being completely leveled with the best gear. They act like elitists who were never low level players or players who have a life outside of the game. It does kill the community and that is why I don't play COD or even Halo as much as I'd like to, the elitists just make the game un-fun. To me I think of someone as "hardcore" when they avidly play the game and know the in's and out's of how to play and actively participate in the game community regardless of their in game level or status. I'd say most of us who don't play 24x7 would fall into that category but know what is what and participate in the community are "hardcore." Unfortunately the so called "Hardcore" players, "Dude Bro's" as I personally refer to them, don't see it that way. They feel like they should be the only ones that are allowed to play and grace their self granted god like status. Its a total game killer, hence why I typically only play with guys (and gal's) here. This is a great community of like minded individuals (casual and hardcore) who understand that life happens and sometimes we can't dedicate hours on end to raid or play.

Casual all the way, it's a badge of honour. Hardcore just translates as deviant, it tells you the person using the title is a no job, no life type! I play approx 2-3 hours about 5 days a week, after work, after kiddy time. Casual and proud, because I'm not a child.

There's no such thing as 'hardcore' or 'casual'. You either play games or you don't.

1 ReplyAgreed, I play 3-4 hours most nights and already have 2 level 31 characters and a third soon to be 31, many VOG hard mode completions and just took down crota last night with some of the other DoD's. I define a hardcore gamer as someone who cranks it up to HARD no matter how much time they have. For example a gamer may not have many people to run with at certain times so jumps on and solo's a nightfall just because they want to complete the hardest content. Or jumps in a group and tries to speed run a raid because they only have that limited playing window. Or plays at midnight because that's the only time they get in their busy schedule. Not someone who has nothing better to do than game all day but someone who aims at being the best they can at a game no matter how often or long they play!!

If I still had the time I would probably be a hardcore gamer. But I still get about 8 to 10 hrs a week which is fine.

I am proud to be a "casual" gamer. I dress casual(usually sweats)I casually drink my hootch and play at night with some awesome folks! im not as casual during the day, levi's and coffee :P

Just about everyone out there these days thinks they're better than the next person. In real life it's things like " I have nicer shoes than you...I have a nicer house/car than you" stuff. In the Destiny world its hours played/raid completions. Its the way it is these days. Everyone thinks they're a special snow flake, especially on the internet where there are no consequences for what is said and its basically anonymous. If you ever want to find out what a person is like, try and find any forums or blogs they are on and read their comments.

Considering how I work to support my family vs. someone who plays 24/7 automatically makes me the hardcore player. Let's face it, most of us work and play with the kids and help the wife out and yet being exhausted we still muster in a couple hours a night. We also tend to play better than most. That last comment can be confirmed because the people I play with on DoD are some of the most skilled people I have met in a game period.
