How can 12 million people be playing destiny, when there is only 7 million people on earth?

Because everyone obviously has an XB1, PS4, Xbox360, & PS3 with Destiny on each console. When waiting for a story cut scene or for your ship to fly to a planet you play on one of the other consoles. There are actually 28 million people playing just not all at once because of time zones.
