If from the beginning they developed a server application that excepted all clients this game would be cross platform/generation. In the 90s anyone could run a quake 1 server anywhere in the world and any client (windows/Linux/Mac) could connect to it. I did this when I was 13... It's not a part of this game because they made a conscious decision not to include it. It is however completely possible, I played against Dreamcast players on my PC back in the day.
