I've had the game for 3 days now, and have been playing a lot. Here's my quick review:
Concept: Excellent
Content: Excellent
Gameplay: -blam!-ing terrible
Since installation I've been plagued with a menagerie of connectivity issues. Of course I read extensively about the potential client-side fixes. So on the plus side, I now understand NAT levels, UPnP, static IP addresses, port-forwarding, and the DMZ. I've tooled around with the Technicolor 8305C gateway that Comcast provided us for hours to make sure that there isn't any issue with NAT on my end. My connection to XBox Live tests say the connection is active and open.
Despite all that, I only get about 5 - 30 minutes of gameplay in at a time before I get dropped. I've seen dozens of caterpillar and hawk, several beaver and flatworm, as well as some one-offs like hare, jackrabbit, and anteater. If I was playing pokemon, I'd be in business. Mixed in are several return to orbit errors, XBL disconnects, and system freezes (usually at the "Verifying Content" stage of login). Getting back in can be as simple as just logging back in, or a full system power cycle of my Xbox & gateway, with a XBL connection test, memory cache wipes, and all sorts of voodoo. Nothing makes me a superstitious whackjob as quick as server side network issues. Sadly, none of this helps. The disconnects seem to be entirely random.
So, I'm very disappointed. The game is beautiful, and the gameplay, when working, is great. I like the PvP and the storyline. I wish there were an option for matchmaking for heorics, since there is no in game chat for LFG purposes and most of my RL friends have PS4 instead of XB360 so we can't play together. Not that I could play with them anyhow with these incessant errors.
All in all, Bungie, it seems like a tremendous waste to go to such lengths to create a gorgeous, engaging cross-genre game like this just to let a big chunk of the community struggle with stable server connections. From what I've read on the forum it's been going on for months. I'll probably give this another week and then take it back to gamestop if nothing changes. It's a tremendous game design, but trying to actually play it is an enormous headache and the frustration really dominates the whole experience.

LOL "XBL" theres your first problem. Xbox is inferior in this day and age people should know better.

"If I was playing Pokémon I'd be in business" LOL!! 10/10.

It's been getting worse as time has gone one. Since the last patch the servers are downright terrible. Maybe the next patch or hotfix will help it out some. But who knows when either will drop or if Bungie even cares to address it. They're still trying to fix the phone app from causing weasel errors and deleting items.

Edited by JT Pain 6661: 12/31/2014 10:41:42 PMGame was developed on a Sony console. Ditch the shitbox! Servers are flooded with all the Christmas newbs too.

Probably not what you want hear but I had connectivity issues for the first two months off and on. Tried everything. Seems the technicolor from Comcast was the issue. Bought my own router and modem, no more problems.

Using a wired format often times eliminates the connection errors. And the others are right, these recent series of hacks has poke a few holes in the servers so they are trying to patch as much as they can as fast as they can.

I used to get caterpillar. I feel for you, no fix from your end. Mine stopped after one of the weekly Thursday updates. That time they were looking to squash caterpillar though. Hope things get better. Best of luck.

In Bungies defense You got the game in the WORST TIME. With all the Hacks they have had to fix a lot of crap. Give it longer. You'll have less error codes. This isn't all their fault.
