Destiny NEEDS a Healer Subclass

(Don't worry, this thread isn't about bashing the Sunsinger, read the title; and please, keep the insults about my mother light :) ) Lately people have been bashing the usefulness of the Sunsinger warlock subclass... And I can't help but go along with it. When I knew I was getting Destiny, I did my research on the Warlock subclasses, as I knew I wanted to be a warlock ever since that first e3 vidoc. Now when I first saw the name "Sunsinger" I immediately thought "Oh, so it's like a healer?". If you ask me that's what the Sunsinger sub should've been all along, a Healer, not some boring old grenade spammer. And the more I think about it the more I see this subclass fitting into the world of Destiny. [Other MMOers and RPGers can understand what I'm going through here, honestly, why is it Destiny try's to act like an RPG but doesn't actually do anything RPG-wise; but I suppose that's a conversation for a later day.] Here are my ideas on the subject: The warlock's melee would, when hitting a teammate, take off a portion of their super energy in addition to melee, but heal the player from a distance. The Warlock's super would create a ring around the caster that, when a teammate would step in, would increase health regeneration by 20-30%. This Ring, unlike the Ward, would follow the caster but he himself would not heal any faster as to keep things on an even playing field. Perhaps this might seem overpowered to you other classes, but just stay with me here for a moment. Isn't the Suros op? Would you argue the Titan Ward is op? With the right amount of fine tuning I believe bungie could do this for a fix on the Sunsinger (In my opinion, and other mmo/RPG players what it properly should be); or gift this to another class, for future DLC maybe? Or better yet! As a free piece of content for Bungie's loyal fanbase! (Yeah... That'll happen) For those of you who actually want to help your team in addition to also getting kills (I know there has to be Some of you out there!) this could be a worthy addition to a coming DLC that I would love to take part in! TL:DR
New Healer Subclass Addition • Melee directly heals Teammates (Still damages enemies) • Super creates a "Ring of Healing" that increases Health Regeneration much faster by 20-30% and follows the caster (Does not affect caster, no faster health rejuvenation) -New Subclass could be proper way to substitute Sunsinger Conundrum or Add a new future subclass for DLC.
Edit 1: Okay, I can understand why people wouldn't want this. You came from call of duty, never played an MMO, have no sense of team, only play deatmatch, and have never played a good Blood Gulch CTF game in your entire life. If your one of those people then I get it. But I don't understand it. Destiny isn't exactly encouraging solo-play, so idk. You have fun lone-wolfing it. Although that term is probably lost with Reach. Edit 2: The "Ring" is a concept I borrowed from Skyrim (A fantastic game for ALL Rpg players) where you can cast a magic protective ring around yourself that heals you and keeps enemies out (Don't remember what it's called, I'll look it up later). Obviously I left the "keeping people out part" for balance but the basic principles are all still there. (I know this didn't originate in skyrim, but that's what I'm thinking of when I think of of a visual representation for the subclass) Edit 3: Wow! some great feedback here guys! Keep it up! Edit 4: Trending, wow! I'm going to be posting a response to the most common seen comments and criticisms and provide a link, or I could put it in a normal format other than that, idk. I'll think of something. Edit 5: I myself have a serious problem with the Orb system that Destiny presents. The orbs are produced but there is no visual indicator (beside some small lines of text in the corner of the screen). For one, the Sunsinger would be a viable subclass for me if there was just more of a visual representation of how your actually helping your teammates. 1. "Using a healer would be useless and would not fit into Destiny at all, and there would never be a situation where we would actually use this."
Obviously what we're talking about isn't a straight up in the most technical term "Healer", what we're discussing is some who can manipulate that period in your shields when they are completely down. That is our target picture where this would be useful. That being said, I do believe a "Healer", noting it as the term we've laid above would be useful and could base itself I'm the world of Destiny based on one simple fact, every player ALREADY has a regeneration factor that can be changed in your subclass with special perks. The super would manipulate this factor for everyone by a significant percent to essentially where they could keep shooting an enemy and regenerate much "health". When I think of when and where this could be useful I imagine myself behind that one door and pressure area we all know of in Blind Watch, the common Mars map in most game types. Say while a warlock is closer against the railing still shooting but behind cover the Titans could jump out of cover and shoot the enemy while he runs from the warlocks bullets, effectively earning the kill and the warlock gaining a support accomedation.
P.S- for anyone interested in a good group of friends to find for raiding and such, join us in the Xbox Clan: HolyHandGrenade.

  • I love the idea of a healer subclass, but it would only work if two things changed about Destiny. 1: We would need more health. Sure, we have more health than say a game like CoD, but we don't have the gaping health pools of a traditional MMO character. In games like WoW, TERA, SWTOR, or Guild Wars, both players and enemies have huge amounts of health, and battles can last quite some time. This benefits the healer because they have more time to recognize when a player is near death, get to them, and pop the heal. I personally don't think there'd really be enough time for this in a Destiny firefight. 2: We would need a better way of seeing teammates' remaining health. Currently we only have the tiny "!" That pops up next to an ally's name to show us that they're in danger. Most MMOs handle this quite easily by allowing anyone in a group to see every ally's health bar on the side of the screen. If Bungie were to add this they could even display the super bar status underneath the health bar. I could be wrong about either of these things, but in my opinion at least the second option should be added if a healer class is to be implemented.

  • I agree. But at the same time, I disagree. If they add healing abilities to a warlock subclass, then they would have to add it to all subclasses to make the gameplay fair. And the warlock subclass, sunsinger, already has a healing ability. When I use radiance, it heals all my teammates that are near me. And being a master warlock, I am able to resurrect myself using radiance. So if bungie were to add more healing abilities, it would be completely unfair and op. Although they could maybe add a new subclass based on healing abilities. But I'm not sure if that would work well.

    • I always thought they should have a support class. A class to buff everyone's attack/defense, be able to heal an individual, and other support perks. I like the idea of a ring to heal people. Maybe have that class generate double the amount of orbs or something like that

    • It's pointless because there isn't a set amount of health between the classes, and the super wouldn't be that imperative to your team's success. We heal pretty fast already, and by the time you cast the super and begin healing, you originally could have healed in the same amour of time. However, if classes were actually based on their roles, (i.e Titans actually being strong, Warlocks actually recovering health, Hunters actually being fast,) better than the other classes, it could make a difference. ,

    • Maybe there should be a perk which regenerates your teammates health while radiance is on or a exotic armor which does the same

Disagree would be way to OP pve. I like the way sunsinger is set. A possible third class would be an arc class. The arc class could give each of the fire team members +arc damage. So if they have solar damage already it'll give solar and arc. an arc charge with a blink that would teleport past opponent putting some arc damage or stun an opponent. jumps would be normal warlock jump maybe an arc teleport? grenades arc paralysis, just stops an opponent area from moving (opponents can still shoot) in a certain area. arc buff throw a grenade at your teammates and they get shields titan solar body the body is covered in flames reducing damage and opponent who touch them puts ignite. or solar flared body where the titan explodes into a giant solar flare that can move. magma grenade area control regular jump etc dunno hunter not sure haven't played this class yet...

I use my hunter as healer/reviver. Warlock has its shield as an extra portion of life. Perhaps it could add a shield to a teammate if you hit them instead

        • Honestly I would say that song of light should be more powerful. Right now it just doubles grenade cooldowns for allies that are really close. I think it should have a bigger area of effect, speed up healing by 50% for everyone, and maybe add one other buff. Right now its pretty useless compared to radiant skin and fireborn. This could solve the problem of too many fireborns and nobody using song of light. Would make sunsingers very useful in more situations than preventing wipes. Another idea is to make it have the 1 time instant regen health perk for all nearby allies when activated, but not for the caster. Makes it balanced, makes sunsinger a better support class and could add more dynamics.

        • I don't think that would work, as none of the subclasses have a set amount of health. If you took damage and stayed damage, than yes, that would be useful. But since shields recharge and their's no health lost it would be significantly underpowered. Having a healing ring would do nothing, as you can't charge forward because it wouldn't heal you instantly. It would only be useful undercover to regain shields faster, but that's pretty pointless. My suggestion would be to still have the support class idea, but when used it instead gave everyone a bottomless clip for the duration of the super. The super would deplete fairly quickly, because of how powerful this is, but it would prove invaluable in raids to get that extra damage, or in PvP to get that final push.

I have thought about this idea as well, and reached a different conclusion. There should not be a healer subclass, since it would be so situational. Instead, for specific encounters that are designed with a healer in mind, they could simply add a healer item that any raid member can pick up. We already have something similar to this in the Crota fight with how automatic healing is disabled and raid members have to use the chalice. A theoretical future raid encounter could have a super shield gun item that you pickup and use to shoot at your teammates to superbuff their shields to survive a specific blast or something, or during raid encounters when automatic healing is disabled. A special tanking item could also be designed as well. The fact that so many raid encounters have unique items (Swords, Relic Shields, Chalices) leads me to believe that items is how they will handle raid healing should an encounter ever require it.

I loved my Healer spamming band aids and buffs in WoW raids. I enjoy support classes. Probably why Defender Titan blows my dress up. That said, I concur with those that say that heal mechanic would would have to change in game before it would really work.

          • Surely the problem is, that as Destiny currently stands, a healing class is completely unnecssary? There is no health mechanic, only shields, which recharge fairly quickly. What would be useful is portable cover but we have that in the form of Ward of Dawn.

          • The mechanic already exists in the game, with the Radiance Perk that reduces cooldowns for nearby allies. Not quite sure why this wouldn't work too, nor why some feel it would be a bad idea! The closest thing we have now is probably the Titan Defender with Ward of Dawn granting a shield by passing through.

          • I don't think Destiny needs a healer subclass tbh. Automatic health regen with only a short delay makes it moot IMO. By the time you see the exclamation mark to let you know they're in trouble, they are either already dead or running to safety to heal. I usually like healer classes, wouldn't touch one in Destiny. Unless they revamp the health system to accommodate.
