Fought Vault of Glass at level 25 as a hunter. When I went for an exotic drop from my team I had a full primary of inventory. First exotic and I lost it!

Pretty sure you can't lose that stuff, it goes to the postmaster

So you didn't lose it, you never had it. It doesn't assign the team an exotic and give it to the person who had open inventory, each person either gets a drop or doesn't based on RNG. If your buddy got it then head the lucky draw.
