Bungie was around before the xbox.
If it wasn't Microsoft, it would have been someone else to pick up the Halo franchise.
If we're completely honest, they probably helped each other (in terms of the popularity of the xbox, not Microsoft as a company)

They definitely helped each other, but Xbox would have been fine without Halo. They had other exclusives and a great network/support.
