I had a run in with my youth. Made me remember why I game.

So I was playing a few skirmish matches in the crucible for a bounty I had when I got a message from a gamer tag I didn't reconise. Normally when this happens it's someone wanting to do a nightfall or weekly which I am happy to jump in and help out with. The message read "Can i plz play destny with you" which I would have ignored as I was only doing some crucible bounties before bed but for some reason I decided to send an invite and play with the stranger. When they joined my party I was greeted with a polite 11 year old kid on the other end of the mic. He was a level 25 and at the time I was leveling up my alt Hunter and only level 19. We played some crucible and he told me how all he had wanted for Christmas was an Xbox One and Destiny and when he got it he was super pumped. I remember being that age feeling the same way about getting Perfect Dark on N64 for Christmas. He asked how to get to level 30 as he didn't know anything about the 'end game' apart from a streamer he followed saying that the real game began after the story was complete but he didn't know what that meant. I was playing with a total noob in purist form. I could have kicked the kid but instead decided to teach him about the game that had taken me so long to work out, I showed him how to get higher level and what he needed to do to earn vanguard marks for better vanguard gear (I didn't like his chances at getting crucible marks). About 15 minuites into playing with the kid he stopped and said "Thanks for helping me, you have the only nice person I have played with". My bitter black heart broke. I thought of myself at his age playing goldeneye with my bigger brother and getting his help to unlock the cheats by speed running the levels as I wasn't good enough to do them. The kid told me that people had told him to leave lobbies and kill himself, questioned his sexuality and verbally abused him. That alone was pretty rough but it was the way that he just shrugged it off as if it was a normal everyday occurrence that really hit me hard. Is this what we have become as a community? As more and more young players pick up controllers and start to join us playing the games we love we are going to encounter more and more inexperienced players. Instead of kicking them from the party or lobby, take a moment to think of what you were like at that age. When people ask how can we clean up our gaming community and make it better, more inclusive and more fun to play in, it starts by being nice to other players. So next time you are online, take a moment to show some nooblove and help build a better community. Feel free to share any stories or experiences of nooblove below
