It's just a stigma and stereotype that all people that play video games are socially awkward and nerds (while this may be true in some cases, it isn't in all) and that all video games are either mindless violent shoot em up killers, or WoW like games with 40 virgin players that live in their moms basement, it sucks because that's just not true!! I consider games an art!
And it should be more widely thought of as such, with sometimes absolutely beautiful and creative landscapes and designs, and dynamic and thoughtful storytelling with well thought out and professionally done voice acting with sometimes better acting than on the big screen.
Also, people seem to forget that gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry, spanning all continents (except maybe Antarctica) and all races and religions (not Amish though). They also forget that people pour they're lives into this hobby and also a job for many, and have trusting and helpful communities and expansive forum and talk sites.
And it's also forgotten how close the maker is to the player, with a movie, if you don't like it, oh well! But with a game, if enough people don't either, it can and often is changed!
So when people say stuff like, video games are stupid, or promote violence, or dumbs down kids, I just laugh at how ignorant they are of the true meaning of online games, to connect people, that's it (in some companies cases, bungie and activision I'm looking at you, it's to make money only) to connect, share, discover, relate, and have fun.
