the hive are an interesting case. They worship the parallel beings from the world that the darkness comes from as gods. Crota Oryx and the many others that we don't yet know about are all from that parallel world. They fight for the darkness, possibly unknowingly though, because they fight for their gods. They were first found on the moon led by the god Crota, who we fight in the dark below raid. He was brought into this world through a portal the hive constructed in the Hellmouth, giving it its name. Eris and her fireteam went in to defeat him and almost succeeded. They were able to banish Crota back to the realm he came from and followed him in to finish him off completely, they were too weak however and lost. Eris, whether a hunter who cloaked or a warlock who self rezed i can not say, survived in this realm by what can be assumed as taking the eyes of an acolyte and replacing her own with them. It wasn't until the hive started to reopen the portal to that world that she could return, bringing the news of Crotas awakening to the tower. She came and sent us on our journeys, taking out the bits and pieces that gave Crota his true strength. With those pieces defeated Crota was weakened and ready to be slain once and for all, thus the raid. The hive are still one of the most pure forms of darkness in the world of destiny and should not be taken lightly. I predict the future of the hive to consist of more atrocities such as phogoth and the gods from the parallel world to make bigger impacts as the game advances. I would suggest a new strike boss being the first seen of a new tier of enemy known as a dragon, being exactly as the name sounds you would fight a dragon with no weakspot as the end boss of a strike, possibly on a different planet as the hive try to take over more than just the earth and the moon.
