Spend 20 minutes doing the daily story, then an hour doing the daily vanguard bounties, and then spend whatever time you have left on the strike playlist. It'll take you like, two weeks to get everything you need to be level 30, if not 31. Also, try to complete the weekly strike until you have 13 strange coins saved up - that way you can buy a piece of exotic gear from Xur when he comes to the tower.
This is not supposed to be something you can hash out in two days. You're going to need patience and time.

What doing the same thing over and over again? That's just developers being lazy.

It really is just RNG though. You don't HAVE to get an exotic, and they aren't just given to you either. That's just how the game works.
