I believe the timer starts as soon as you cross the bridge before the hallway. We once waited outside before entering the hall just to make sure the timer wouldnt start, still the door was already closed and we had no chance of getting the chest. I prefer wiping the raid before trying it. Ever since we have always got the chest in time.
