Deep Stone Crypt, a Titan Mark sold by the Speaker, states that a subroutine is the cause of the first Exo consciousness, the term subroutine implies it was programmed into them. Then again, I may be wrong, I'm not a computer programmer.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer and you are correct. A subroutine would be something programmed into them or patched into whatever software they're running.
