The Vex are (could be) an ancient race of machines traveling across galaxies turning worlds into machines to help them achieve their ultimate goal.
What that goal could be I have no idea.

While the time-traveling nature of the Vex may have allowed them to somehow reach these locations, it does indicate that they may have a non-Traveller origin. EDIT: Reference made during "The Nexus" strike.
