Part 2: Home
“C’mon, we’re going to be late for dinner” Matthew’s father said, searching through the bushes. Soon, he found the familiar feel of a bike handle in his hand. He turned the machine on and easily pulled the floating vehicle out of the bushes. It was a green and white sparrow that Matthew’s father had paid very much for, though it was one of the more common ones that are sometimes seen on the streets.
“You brought your Sparrow?” Matthew said with amazement. His father usually only used it when he was late for a business trip.
“It was really damn hard to hide, what with guardians being able to make theirs disappear and reappear whenever they feel like it.” He then realized his curse word and immediately said, “Never curse Matthew.”
His father got on the Sparrow, careful not to overbalance the floating vehicle. He then gestured for Matthew to get on, which the boy did quickly. Sparrows were usually built for only one person, but Matthew was small enough to ride on it with his father.
They sped down the streets towards district 22, and they both managed arrive at Matthew’s home in only two minutes.
As Matthew opened the door he was quickly embraced by his mother.
“Ohmygoodnesswherewereyouyouhadmeworriedsickdon’teverdo-,” Matthew’s father cut his mother off,
“He’s fine Veronica, see?” he said gesturing to the child’s entire body. His mother narrowed her eyes.
“No he’s not, Jack, he clearly has a cut on his cheek.” Matthew’s mother clutched his face and examined the cut closely,
“You’re lucky it hasn’t been infected yet, honestly.”
“Its fine, Veronica. It’s probably really shallow anyways.” His father intervened, saving Matthew from half an hour of scrubbing his face before dinner.
“I suppose so, but still…” His mother trailed off, still closely examining the cut on Matthew’s face. She then released her grip and headed towards the dining room.
“Come on you two, dinner is ready.”
Matthew ate his soup in silence while his mother and father discussed something about Matthew’s father’s business, when out of the blue Matthew blurted out a question.
“What’s so bad about the Fallen?”
His parents stared at him in silence. After a few moments his father placed his spoon down on the table.
“You see Matthew, the Fallen hurt people.”
“But we do too! We do it as much as them, if not more.”
“Matthew, the Guardians protect the city and keep it safe.”
“All they do is go out and kill things for shinier clothes!”
“Matthew, don’t talk about things you don’t know.”
“But even you don’t know what you’re talking about!” Matthew exclaimed,
“Well why don’t you go to your room until you know what you’re talking about.” His father told Matthew, his voice raised.
“Fine!” Matthew stomped off to his room, muttering under his breath,
“I do know what I’m talking about…”
