I for one don't use my mic anymore, just for the reasons above. I don't want to be treated like a baby and led through the VoG ect. I'm trying to get the mission done as much as they are, just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't do it. Or other times it just gets awkward, so I find it easier to just mute myself. Saves a lot of pain and effort.
