I imagine some of the sketches are people playing along. But I have travelled to the US quite a bit, and I have to say that there's a lot of people there who are really out of touch with what happens outside of their front door (figuratively). Especially when it comes to politics, the economy, cross border issues, etc. And that's even in places like New York State and Michigan, which get a lot of Canadian day trippers.
