In my opinion, buying it is the real way to earn it. I didn't get lucky and have it dropped into my lap after an activity. I had to complete nightfalls and weekly level 30's to earn the coins to be able to buy it when I get home from work. By your logic, I didn't "earn" anything I own in real life because I bought it with money I worked for, vs being randomly gifted to me?

Some people get lucky some grind to get it. Earning is either grinding for it or buying it from Xur, not being last in crucible or carried on a strike
