At least you got 9 shards. In the last 3 weeks of doing 3ightfalls on 3 characters plus a forth character in one week, I've gotten a grand total of 1 exotic shard (Warlock helmet that had far worse stats than the same one I already had), 8 shards and 10 energy. I'd rather get a stack of energy over a useless legendary weapon, because at least it translates into having more materials. So 10 Nightfalls for 8 shards, 10 energy and one exotic shard. I just hope it's not shards, because I have somewhere around 400 of them. Energy, I don't mind so much. Just remember, no matter how bad you're getting screwed by the RNG, someone else out there is always getting screwed harder. I'm sure there's people out there that had it even worse off than I did. Granted, none of my friends had quite the same horrible luck as I did, but I guarantee you there's people out there who did.
