Why would the furthest planet from the Sun not be covered in ice and look like a desert? Space Magic? These things confuse me

Because the 'red planet' is mostly made of iron which when oxidized turns red, mars' atmosphere mostly consists of nitrogen (with a bit ox oxygen)and (if i can remember) its poles are made of solid/liquidized oxygen. Yes mars can be terraformed but only if both poles release enough (and the right amount) of oxygen
