Iirc iron is formed naturally when giant stars run out of lighter elements they use for fusion such as hydrogen and helium before they die. If they're large enough and have enough energy, they will start producing the heavier metals.

Max is right. The planet was once covered in iron when it was created. The iron was exposed over time and turned to red rust.
