Apparently the guy I was replying to did not. As he swapped mars and Mercury on the list. And no Venus is not the closest to earth. Mars is. The fact that we currently have rovers on Mars and a flag on the moon should tell you that alone. So either way.. Still wrong.

I'm an Astrometry major. But sure Mars isn't the closest. Just cuz you say so. Venus has an off set orbit. It's only closer than Mars for a small section of each year. While Venus does come closer in this time. Mars holds its orbit closer to that of the earths. Meaning most of the year Mars is closer. And why Mars is visible in the sky more often. I know you have google fella. Use it to educate yourself.

You know the planets move, right? At the moment, Mars is the closest. In a few years or less, it'll be Venus. You must be new to that "Astometry" thing. ;-) Edited to add: Apparently, every 2,000 years, Mercury is the closest planet to Earth. You Google something new every day.
