I'm an Astrometry major. But sure Mars isn't the closest. Just cuz you say so. Venus has an off set orbit. It's only closer than Mars for a small section of each year. While Venus does come closer in this time. Mars holds its orbit closer to that of the earths. Meaning most of the year Mars is closer. And why Mars is visible in the sky more often.
