Never paid attention in school did you. The sand has a lot of iron in it. When iron rusts it ends up being red. There is no ice or snow because there is no atmosphere. Simple as that.

I'm pretty sure that it's the atmosphere itself that's the dark red. The surface itself is a greyish brown.

There is an atmosphere on Mars.
-
Uhm, there's ice on Mars...
-
Not much

I'm no scientist but I thought rust was caused by oxygen and iron interacting and if there was no atmosphere there would be no oxygen and therefore no rust. So wouldn't there have to be some kind of atmosphere?
-
Correct. Rust is iron oxide, which is made up of iron atoms and oxygen atoms. It occurs when iron oxidizes with, surprise!, oxygen. So there has to be oxygen somewhere on Mars, and it is most likely coming from all the C02.

Congratulations sir you have made this thread look even more retarded

There is an atmosphere. How do you think those insane dust storms on Mars works? The sand/dust contains rust, it's iron oxide.
-
Oh my god that's awesome haha. Does he really think there would be storms if there was no atmosphere

Edited by Tucker: 1/28/2015 5:05:43 AMIdk, you would have to ask him/her. Most people probably equate breathable air to having an atmosphere. Or maybe he/she heard that Mars air was thinner and thought it had relatively no atmosphere, which is true. Mars has less than 1% of an atmosphere compared to Earth. Edit: that's actually atmospheric pressure. Not always a direct correlation. Mars is 95% CO2 vs Earths 70% N2 which is heavier. So I should correct myself and say Mars atmospheric pressure is less than 1% of Earths. Edit2: Wow, my bad. CO2 is heavier than N2. So Mars really does have a serious lack of atmosphere compared to Earth.

Regardless there's still an atmosphere
-
Oh most definitely.
