Never get greedy...

...in a nightfall. Perhaps my tale of woe will convince you of the wisdom of this statement. Me, my brother and a buddy stormed omnigul's sanctuary last night. Blood was spilled. Many revives were performed, at times heroically. On numerous occasions we each found ourselves to be the last man standing and rallied. At last we cleared a wave and had omnigul's health down to 10%. That's when fortune abandoned us. It began when my brother popped his radiance super on accident (I suppose we've all been there), thereby depriving us of a self-rez insurance policy. No matter. Her shield was down, so emboldened i leapt to her bridge and sent every round of my heavy mg in her direction. I watched in horror as I ran out of ammo at the point when she was probably 5 shots from falling (one rocket would have done the trick, but we were out of heavy). Now I should have just jumped down, gotten to cover, reloaded and cleared the adds patiently, but greed is a seductive mistress. Instead I called out "Everyone dps the boss!" And switched to my primary scout rifle. My two compatriots came out of cover at my direction and began looking for an angle. That's when we realized that we had one of the bonus wizards and two boomer Knights from the darkest recesses of the room still up. Alas I was fell'd by a mighty boom from a knight. My buddy was mowed down by an onslaught from the other knight and the wizard. My brother (who should have had a self-rez) was the last man standing. As my friend began the "no, No, NO!" chant, I shouted "stay up!" But it was too late. He was killed by a parting boomer shot as he fled for cover. As we watched the death screen, I was left with the harrowing sound of omnigul's sadistic cackle in my ear, and the vision of her health bar with the tiniest sliver of yellow remaining. Then we were in Orbit with 40 minutes of precious my-wife-and-kids-are-sleeping game time floating away on a breeze. Do not weep for me guardians. Save your remorse for the weak. I am strong and I will persevere as our civilization does in defiance of the haunting darkness. Instead learn the lessons my mistakes have to teach, so that we may all become more perfect versions of our own resilience, and so that our collective legend may continue to grow. Heed my words: never get greedy in a nightfall. And for the traveller's sake clear the adds before putting dmg in the boss people. That's just sloppy. Edit: Thanks for all the tales of fails guys. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who loses his focus and goes bananas to the detriment of his fire team from time to time.

As others have said, I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I was all to eager to put my newly purchased Dragon's Breath to use on her (For some reason, Darth Vader saying, "I have you now!" keeps popping in my head) and things went pretty much exactly as they did for you. Patience is definitely a virtue that was not enforced this day! Oh, and BTW, I also had someone - another Guardian though, jump in front of me as I was unleashing Dragon Breath's fury; it did not end well for me. LOL

  • I did something similarly stupid. My ghorn convinced me I could be the hero of all heros by jumping on the platform, down her shields and ghorning her to death. It went great until an acolyte hopped in front as I fired. Pretty sure bits of us are still being sponged off the ceiling.

I see you fell into the(not to be taken as an insult) "all brawn and no brain" category? Loved your words of wisdom! I hate it when that happens and glad to know that it happens to others. Now I don't feel alone! Now it's all about organization and tactics and hopefully cooperative team mates not wanting to be the lone victor. Happy hunting!

    • Yours is a harrowing tale that is sadly all too familiar to me. "There's only a bit of health left, pile on" ( SKULL)

So maddening to get that far and die. It's hard to want to run through it all again. I started the nightfall today, solo, just to get the Eris bounty. After I completed it I continued on to see how far I could get. I made it to the last section when a person from my friends list joined in after I had only taken about half of her life. I thought excellent, I can knock this out. Just as the person joins, I die, which was great timing. We managed to grind her down little by little, with me reviving my friend often. Got her to the point where one or two more rockets would have finished her off, I was reviving my friend and died. So bummed to get that far, but I really needed to change my 9 month old's dirty diaper and feed the poor little crying guy. I felt bad that we didn't finish it, but the little crying monster at my feet made me feel much worse. You really have to be methodical about how you approach each section. I found myself continually switching weapons, when I could, based on the enemies type of shield. And the final battle area has a very repeatable sequence it follows in terms of how the enemies spawn. Watch out for the exploding thrall coming from behind you. Just take your time and bring ammo.

        • I feel your pain. Omnigul seems taylor made to cause those "defeat from jaws of victory" moments. Nightfalls seem especially punishing to Dads. I couldn't tell you how many times I've wiped a Nightfall and simply didn't have the time to try again. But, as always, Dad first Guardian second!

          • Lol, my daughter and I tried again tonight. We got close, really close! But the end was so close to dinner time and we started getting desperate to take down Omnigul....our stomachs were growling. Yep, hunger was getting the best of us and the great smell from the mess hall was calling to come and eat ever so loudly! You know how it goes; A hungry Guardian is a Dead Guardian!! Happy hunting!

            • After several attempts, sometimes not even making it to her, my team finally got her down to about a tenth. We had been extremely careful, only letting one go out from cover after we had (we thought) cleaned up all the ads. Like the OP, when we saw her health bar drop to a sliver we smelled blood and got greedy. 2 went out to pile on damage, even though she had just screached. I had went left and was tracking with my sniper when I gigantic freaking sword filled my scope and caved in my noggin. At the same time, the guy who went right got wizard balls crammed up his ---, and our lone guardian remaining got overran attempting to revive him. My stubborn ass probably would kept trying, but as you all know you can only tell a 5 year old '10 more minutes and it will be your turn' so many times before a catastrophic meltdown occurs. Patience, guardians, patience...

              • I can commiserate. Did the nightfall for myself on Tuesday night. Went into the little hidey-hole of an alcove on the 2nd floor on the far side of the room with 2 other guys. Killed Omnigul (for some reason, I think of it as a "her") in about 45 seconds (simultaneous Gjallarhorn and arc-rocket shots to take down shields, followed by 2 Icebreaker shots from each of us). Then went to help another Dad out last night. There were 3 of us. Went back to the hidey-hole with the other Dad while the other guy stayed in the first hallway. Things were going fine, until I revived the Dad in the hidey-hole . . . and he respawned UNDER the alcove! Needless to say, he died. Then I died trying to revive. Then the last guy died trying to stay alive. Restarted and had to do things the old-fashioned way. For nightfalls like this, I'm thinking that it might just be quicker to grab a level 25 or lower (lowest level that can join) and have them stay about 3 rooms back from any fighting, and let the other 2 kill everything. That way, you've always got a failsafe. In return for him (lower level guy) not getting XP for killing anything, he would get rewards at the end.

              • The team I was playing with last night got her down to one third health when I became last guardian standing. Took my time, made a path to one of my team mates only to be killed by a boomer hiding. We did a second run and finished. I got 11 ascendant energy!!!

                • Made the same mistake a good few times going for the heroic rez. Now when I see that I'm the last Guardian up I always run.
