This is a warning to all Destiny players who are currently using a plasma tv. Do not play Destiny exclusively over the course of a few months. This can cause possible permanent damage to your beloved tv! This happened to my tv with average play time since launch.
The problem lies with the bottom left corner of the HUD containing the super meter, the grenade symbols and the weapon symbols. Most games have static HUD's, but this isn't an issue because pretty much all games have some sort of transparency to the HUD or at least the option to make it transparent. Unfortunately Destiny's HUD on the bottom left is not transparent, it's bright white and bright yellow. Bungie doesn't even offer the option to make it transparent or even less bright! The combination of relatively dark backgrounds with super bright solid hud elements is too much of a risk for plasma! Obviously they did not have plasma tv owners in mind when making this decision.
Here is an example of my tv with a white background
And here is one with a yellow background
I have been attempting to get this image off my screen for a few days now with only slight improvement. Plasma tv burn in on 2009 and up models is almost impossible. Key word, ALMOST! Hopefully over the course of a few months it will fade to be unnoticeable.
Also if anyone was curious I have a Panasonic ST50 that's barely two years old and it's the best looking tv I have ever seen. Incredible response time, black levels and color! I've played countless games on this tv with no issues ever until Destiny. This has pretty much stopped me from playing the game.
*edit* For anyone wondering why I would buy a plasma. Simple answer, best picture you can buy! And for half the cost of top of the line led/lcd tv's. I had an led beforehand that simply had too much imput lag even in game mode, and lackluster picture. I was compelled to buy after playing on a friends pioneer kuro.
*TLDR* Bungie needs to add the option to customize our huds or at least transparency options like pretty much every other game in existence to minimize the risk to plasma tv owners of strong image retention or worst of all, permanent burn in.
*EDIT* After reading the replies plenty of other people have had this same exact issue WITH DESTINY ONLY. Average play time shouldn't ruin our tv's! Bungie, we can play plenty of other games without fear of damage. Please take us into consideration! Game on fellow plasma owners, just not on Destiny...

Wow when the game first came out and people started glimmer farming in loot caves and what not , there were some concerned gamers out there posting thread and reddit about screen burn in but everyone laughed it off as a joke and here we are almost 5 months later and we have proof of screen burn in. I'm not saying you glimmer farmed in loot caves or anything, I'm just stating there were some gamers out there that saw this coming a mile away. I really hope your expensive t.v. isn't ruined indefinitely. .If it is I highly recommend going 4k led..I have an lg uhd and it's gorgeous

People still own plasma TVs?
-
I have a Samsung plasma. As you said, best picture there is. I run a program once in awhile that takes care of that for me. It's built into the TV. Never had any issues. Ed
-
There is a fix. There are videos you can play to get it back to a normal picture. Also, looks at Samsung LED tvs. They are cheaper but same picture quality, if not better.
-
Who's using plasmas these days? Lol
-
Why would you game on a plasma? Their issues have been known since their beginning... Also the viewing angles/glare are horrid...
-
I'm running a 60" Samsung plasma and have had 0 issues. It has the pixel shifting technology so I think that's what has saved it.
-
You should not and can not blame destiny or any other game for ruining a plasma tv. This issue has been known since plasma came out. It's the reason I went with led... On another note.. People still buy plasma lol
-
Dam that sucks...i see knights in dreams...is this like, the same thing ?
-
You realize that this happens if you play anything too long, right? HUD transparency doesn't matter in this case unless it is completely transparent. And I don't think that playing any game with the Blind Skull on the entire time is a great idea. Especially for Destiny.
-
Destiny needs to allow us to make those HUD displays a bit translucent.
-
Boy am I glad I have an lcd/led tv, i hope That the plasma tv companies fix this issue because bungie won't That was a joke you can laugh now
-
People still own/buy plasma tvs?
-
lcd MASTERRACE
-
Been playing games on a Panny V series plasma for 4 years. Zero burn-in.
-
Dude, it's a plasma tv... That's what they do... They burn, that's why it's common knowledge to not use plasma for gaming. Cause games have huds and other things that stay on screen where as a movie constantly moving.
-
Buy a LED
-
Dear people who know nothing about tvs. DONT BUT A PLASMA FOR GAMING! buy a LED
-
"Guardian Down" banner now burned into your plasma screen. Should have bought an LED
-
Anyone with half a brain and certain degree of common sense knows what image burn-in is..... T.T I mean...duh.
-
Any game can do that.
-
I have a plasma and don't have this problem My television has a game mode option.
-
You can change the screen bounds intermittently
-
Go to settings - screen options - white wash There will be an option where the TV basically bleaches it's plasma cells with a white image for 30 mins or so. If your that worried... Plus by just watching TV it will disappear
-
People still buy plasma TVs for gaming? The -blam!- are you smoking?
-
Samsung 50" plasma, between my wife, son, and my account on destiny that's probably 800 to 1000 hours and no real issue. My account alone is over 650 hours. I bought mine for gaming because of the quality of the picture. I did a roughly 400 hour break in, twice what was recommended to be sure. I do run scrolling every night for 10 minutes when I go to bed. Thankfully the picture is still as amazing as the day I bought it! Hopefully your issue will resolve itself with normal use. In the future if you're going to go with plasma try to get one with a similar feature. For mine specifically I just turn on scrolling and go to bed 10 minutes later the TV shuts itself off. Good luck.
