As the title reads above, I believe Dragons Breath is better than many of you may think. Better than Gjallahorn in many cases.
I am not saying it replaces Ghorn in every encounter, just in some situations.
I run DB in Crota's End in every phase except for the Crota fight with extreme success.
Lamps - Drop a huge blast with the Flare at a lamp and let your fireteam recover breifly.
Dropping a blast in your path will cause the thrall to disperse all over the place, often killing themselves falling into holes.
And lastly, firing it at the base of the bridge, keeps thrall back, while you wait for it to build and while you sprint across the bridge.
Bridge- If you know the lanes where the mobs spawn, you can spam them with DB, dealing significant damage to them as soon as they exit.
Hallway - 1 DB rocket at 331 kills a shrieker. Also, firing the rockets into the hallway, clears it of thralls for your runner to make the 2nd chest.
Ir Yut- This encounter is where the Rocket Launcher really shines. After killing both wizards, and clearing the shriekers on both sides, rush left and dump 5 remaining DB's shells into her and she literally melts. She barely moves, and basically sits in the AOE damage the whole time. Not to mention it deals TONS of damage to the adds around her.
Also, most of the strike bosses hardly move, which makes DB extremely effective for them. Such as the devil walker, valas, phogoth, sepikis, the templar in VOG and the nexus. The list goes on and on.
Edit: I'll get some guardians together today, and use our DB's to show just how effective they are. Stand by for youtube links. Give me a day or so, I am a parent so I get about 1-2 hours a day tops.
Oh wow, this is trending. Apparently people don't believe me.

The AOE damage is just not enough. The flares don't last long enough, are too small, and don't do enough damage to justify using an exotic slot. Yes, a stationary boss will get hit by the flare damage, but its weak. The initial blast makes up the bulk of the damage, you are better off using a legendary RL to free up the exotic slot, if you have Ghorn, then there's no reason not to use that. It could have been, (and could still be if bungie patches it) a decent exotic, but as of now, the flare is just too weak.

I need to level mine up. I do think this rocket launcher has some great uses, and these are some great ones.
-
Edited by cabinny00: 2/2/2015 6:12:39 PMCareful now soon people will call using the weapon as you suggest as cheesing, you know because you are not using it how bungie wants you to! Also Kudos on strategy development, does not make me want that weapon anymore then before but at least someone found a way to make it useful.
-
I really want to believe this can be a good exotic
-
I was just thinking about this last night but only for the Templar. He doesn't move so it would just sit there and burn him if you get a group of these and prevent him from teleporting how long would it take to bring him down? And would this be a good way to get the chest
-
LOL that might be true! XD i maxed it out to 331 and never used it. But i will give it a try, poor my gjellyhornie :( is gonna be replaced some times.

You are correct situationally Dragon's Breath can be very good. I especially agree on the IR Yut Encounter. Wolfpack rounds can be mitigated by mobs in the room but dragons breath can get the job done, this of course assume she has started singing. I do keep Dragon's Breath around for these instance. I do disagree with you though Dragon's Breath is not better than I think because I would only pull it out in a niche situation meaning it sits on the sidelines the most of the time. I don't really agree with the idea of using it to clear thralls, most of the time they are mitigated by a variety of different strategies. Even in comparison a weapon like Gjallahorn will kill the thralls with a blast and then the wolfpack rounds will hunt down the other close thralls giving your team breathing room. I have never personally seen the solar flare as an effective deterrant. The biggest problem with dragon's breath is the solar burn makes enemies move. This really hurts it for boss fights making it really only viable on super immobile targets like you point out. Bottom line I use my heavy weapon when I either need to kill mobs as fast as possible or on boss fights. Dragon's Breath doesn't fit with my playstyle for the majority of these encounters.

Very good thread... will have to try on ir yut! I never go in until she starts singing anyway.

Edited by KingSlayerKat: 2/2/2015 5:34:22 PMDB is 100% useless to those of us who are warlocks. Both voidwalker and sunsinger have DOT grenades pretty much identical to DB(the voidwalker one is just purple). Plus, sunsinger grenades can catch an enemy on fire with the right perk, causing additional DOT. Pair with sunbreakers, and you have about 15 seconds or more of continuous damage for one grenade.

I agree. Tracking would make it unbelievably broken, but I love the AOE effect. Lamps in particular, as you suggested, is a great spot.
-
Question is... Is ir yut soloable with it: p Still haven't been able to solo all of CE and most the "advice " Ive gotten was 'get ghorn' . had db last time I tried but it wasn't upgraded to the flare at the time. So ice breaker + slowarlock = not enough time for me
-
But I have solor grenades that do the same thing and a Gjallahorn lol
-
Anyone who thins DB is the worst RL is a scrub who can't use a RL without tracking
-
Needs a tracker
-
I've not got the gjallyhorn but just used the dragons breath against omnigal in the strike for first time and I have to say the solar flare ruined that bitch ha never seen her die so quick
-
It wrecked Omnigul for me. She didn't move out of the sphere at all. Just sat there taking DOT in the solar flare and trying to blast me. Was the easiest 9 coins I ever made. Gjallarhorn has been placed on such a pedestal that many will never even consider the utility of another fire rocket launcher. That being said, I don't have the ghorn and can't personally make the comparison.
-
If you're on XB1 I have a maxed DB
-
Edited by Scottathon79: 2/2/2015 5:01:52 PMI like it and use it in similar ways at times. Gally is the boss killer this is the crowd killer/mob buster. Truth is the pvp king though.
-
Have not used it much since I got Hunger of Crota. It is nice to be able to run Hunger and IB together. After reading this I think I will start using it a bit more.
-
All very good points
-
I personally love this weapon! I think that it gets lot of hate becuase it doesnt track... I dont want a ton o the same rocket launchers.. Thats why i like this weapon it feels a bit original
-
so what your saying its useful for teams that dont have a warlock? got it.
-
I love using mine for fun. Not everything has to die from Ghorn. Keep up the good work guardian.
-
I believe you
-
Waiting for the video
-
I got it max out and it's good wizards hate dragons breath solar it's good but same it won't track enemies then it would have been op as hell
