People say Venus is the hotter because, wait for it, Venus IS hotter than Mercury.
On Mercury temperature will vary from -170°C up to +420°C approximately during the day/night.
On Venus the temperature is pretty much +465°C all the time.
You need to learn that closer to the Sun doesn't necessarily mean hotter. There are things like atmospheric properties and other variables that have to be accounted for ;-)
