Do people actually think that $500MM is a lot of money for ten year project?
I don't think it is. In fact based on comments from DeeJ (there are 500 developers, working on this game) that amount would mostly be taken up just from salaries. I don't know what developers get paid, I assume they are close to slave labour though, 50-60k a year??
That doesn't include, infrastructure costs, marketing, rent, distribution, and probably a bunch of other costs I am not aware of since I am not in this industry.

The way Destiny turned out, the majority of that cash was thrown into the hype trains engine.

500 million plus crazy revenue for a video game is more than enough...you definitely don't know what you're talking about. Plus Bungie is not a new company and they're not poor ok... 500 million is definitely way too much actually.
-
lol. Ok.
-
Lol, ten year project? Okay, maybe 5-6 years, but ten years? I don't think so. Half a million dollars is probably the biggest budget that any video game has had. That's why it's disappointing
-
I think Rockstar would disagree with you concerning Grand Theft Auto V.
-
Actually, if you look it up, Destiny is the most expensive game ever made. MW2 was more expensive than GTA5 actually. Also, GTA5 wasn't disappointing, so that kind of justifies their use of so much money, as well as MW2.
-
Half a million dollars is probably the biggest budget that any video game has had.
That's enough to pay about 7 developers for 1 year.
-
You're forgetting revenue from actual sells. Yes, the $500M is over TEN years and was not just for Destiny 1 (which some forget), but budget increases as long as net profit increases. Shareholders do not like to see companies sit on excess money. They want it to be reinvested. Also, Activision most likely increased their investment due to the success in sells.
-
Actually, the 500 million was only for Destiny plus its add on materials. It is the most expensive game ever made.
-
k. I heard Bungie was spreading that out over the series But aside from that, budgets are always much larger to successful companies pulling in profits. Destiny 2 will have a nice budget and won't have to worry about initial developments and just work on expanding and fixing. Should be interesting in what they come up with.

At the rate this is going I say 2 year project lol.

A grand a week? Slave labor?...what?
-
If you go back in time and look at the 'breaking in' pages, you'd see that it's not at all uncommon to go way over 8 hours a day. At 50k/y for that level of work, that's pretty low, not to metion that 50k/y is not enough to support a family any more. Now, I don't actually believe they only make that much, I'm just sayin.
-
Let's just put this in perspective. Minimum wage is 15k a year. And that's only IF you manage to find a job that is going to give you 40 hours a week as most minimum wage jobs don't. Poverty line for a family of four is 23k. If you can't manage a family off of 50k a year you need to recheck your spending priorities. I know families that live off of two minimum wage jobs with two kids. Dudes concept of how far money goes is clearly -blam!-ed.
-
Man, if slave labor is 50k a year, I don't even want to think about what kind of labor I do.
-
Try around 100k a year.
-
If devs get paid 100k a year, that is the entire budget for the game. I don't think this is possible. Unless the number of Devs DeeJ quoted is high. 500 Devs * $100,000 * 10 years = $500MM

The 500 million isn't for the devs. It's for the game. Activision published DESTINY, therefore the money goes into the development of DESTINY. I'm sure Bungie pays their own workers, plus a bonus when the game sells. Don't forget that Bungie has been around for a looooong time, and has made one of the most successful franchises in....well not just gaming, in the history of franchises. I'd also be surprised if they aren't getting a bit of money from the newer Halos as well, considering they created Halo.
-
Yes the cost of workforce is always included in budgets. I do them annually.
That is the entire budget for this game.
Uh, yeah. That's kinda the whole point of budget. How many people you can employ and at what salary you can employ them. After you get done with licensing fees for software, pretty much the only thing left is the salaries of the workers. Now, if marketing is included within that $500m, then it is very likely that they make more like 70k/y.
-
You forget about all the money that developers get from sale profits. The games budget isn't the only income source for the developers. Bungie probably has millions and is still making money off of Halo. The 500 mill was more than likely mostly used towards R&D for the game, not paying the employees.

When you measure the performance of a development product or project you almost always measure it against the expected costs. If there are significant changes to your assumptions, i.e. developer salaries skyrocket to 150,000 a year, you may update your budget. You don't get to offset your revenues to justify spending more money. You are thinking of a cash projection. Two different beasts.
