The thing is we are in the time just after the collapse. In the game your given all the info of the world around you (yes I know dinkledik acts like we know a ton of shit) but then all the stuff we experience in game (weapon, places, enemies) are all broken down more in the grimiore once we claim them. I understand it could be in game but I feel like Bungie wanted to cut the reading from npcs out (being a console game), I always dreaded all the reading from all the npcs but now you do kinda miss it. It was just a innovative thing to try that failed to most the community but I disagree with any comment about the story being broken. We are creating and playing it, the game hasn't been out for 6 months yet.
Edit: guild wars 2 releases their story in sections (although there is more to do and more rewards for many other "in-between" activities) and it was a very nice effect for keeping gameplay and longevity of players.
