Agree, the story is there, somewhere... Again, the delivery was poor, and some of the writing was truly subpar. "That wizard came from the Moon" was a lot better than many lines left in the game script.
The game took a different turn one year prior to release. The rating changed, and the goals and content changed. Whether or not there was once a different story in Joe Staten's work, we will never know. I guarantee you whatever it was, it was told in a different way than what the current game delivers.
10 year plan? I've been a Bungie fan for over a decade, and appreciate a game with content other than shooting random stuff. I've read many Halo novels as a result of enjoying the games so much in the first place. There is zero interest for me in Destiny to "know" any more details, I truly tried to pay attention (did not read all the collectible cards though), and still don't have a clue. Worse part is, I have no desire to know.
Focus is clearly on MMO style with loot, grind and leveling. Great game for some, but not everyone. I'm part of "not everyone."
Bungie is happy with the numbers of players playing Destiny (as they do they remind us with weekly statistics...), I don't see any reason for them to change the formula. Financial success is the most important goal for a developer this big. This is no longer the same team of talented people who created magic in a small studio long ago.
Martin O'Donnell described Bungie's workplace culture as "a slightly irreverent attitude, and not corporate, bureaucratic or business-focused"
We can safely say this in no longer a valid quote.
Times change, people change as do businesses and goals. As an artist, Bungie is still my favorite developer, visually. As far as game play, it's not what I enjoy, can't say I did not try ;)
