I'd think I would go with when they're alive. I agree with The_BondOfFlame for the screaming benefit. Also when they're alive you get to look them in the eyes giving you that huge rocker. And I'd also say alive because the meat is more tender and warm.

Well when they're alive you get the added benefit of screaming and what not while afterwards it's much easier. In the end, I'd have to say it depends on their race. You know, whether or not they're a black or white person really effects the meat tenderness. For white after, for -blam!- before.
