• Dead Orbit: Analysis The birth of Dead Orbit was both instantaneous and prolonged in the wake of the Collapse; escaping Earth as it fell became a priority for the remaining civilians who, with military defence, tried to escape the wrath of the Fallen. Many civilians were able to escape, most only making it as far as the Reef, few surviving to become the Awoken. Their fate unknown to survivors on Earth, many still hoped for an escape from Earth, fuelled initially by blind nihilism and pessimism, and members of this train of thought were amongst those that first gathered under the Traveller. Unlike the others gathered there, the Guardians and humans subscribed saw their construction as a temporary port in preparation for escape; their ultimate goal was escape, not just from Earth, but from Sol, the Solar System and the Darkness. Out of post-Collapse depression came a strange sense of optimism; renewed purpose for expansion and the chance of another Golden Age in stars abroad. From this early period, Dead Orbit officially began to form. Organised into various groups, each headed by an Arach, and as the first Awoken returned to Earth this only grew. A partnership with Omolon, an energy weapons manufacturer, brought practicality to their once-impossible goal. Dead Orbit began forming a fleet, gathering weapons and armour, and modifying them for any hypothetical conditions the long voyage could bring. At this point, Dead Orbit's ideology began to clash, with the pure practicality of certain Arachs (recognisably, Jalaal) clashing with the pure idealism of others. To offset this early trouble, the Faction Wars (a brief clash between the City's many groups that was so bad no-one ever talks about it) took place, giving Dead Orbit a direct enemy in the form of New Monarchy. The War made Dead Orbit realise the importance of Guardian support, rather than civilian aid. Increasing emphasis on Lord Shaxx's Crucible was made, as training for both interstellar combat and a possible coup against New Monarchy started. Their driven dedication to escaping Earth, and a disbelief at the credibility of both the Consensus and New Monarchy, makes Dead Orbit a threat to any Earth-based group in their way, but also makes them humanities' best chance at establishing itself away from Earth.
