• Fallen Biology: Summary An analysis of Fallen physiology and how it infers conditions on their home planet. The Fallen are particularly interesting, biologically-speaking, because we know much about them. Physically, the Fallen resemble arachnids, with mouths and eyes hinting a similarity to Earth species such as spiders or scorpions. Difficult in determining what size an "average" Fallen is caused by their varying physiologies (likely caused by increased dependence on the Ether substance) but it seems that a Dreg (a Fallen largely deprived of Ether) is roughly the same size (or larger, without the hunch most Dregs possess) than a "normal" human (considering that Guardians are larger than average due to a similar dependency on Light). This would suggest that the Fallen's home world is either similar or slightly weaker gravitationally than Earth. This strikes true canonically (as the Fallen are often described as having been similar to Humans) and might also explain their comfort on planets such as Venus or on Earth's Moon despite their lower gravities. Previous points considered, it is probable that their home planet was likely similar in size to Mars or Venus, which might also explain why their multiple limbs were able to evolve without becoming a waste of energy in a 1G scenario (although any problems they may have had are largely resolved by the benefits Ether causes). On the subject of Ether, the Fallen seem to have become (for lack of a better term) addicted to the Ether substance, as much that without it they die. This seems to be a consequence of prolonged and consistent consumption of Ether. Despite its benefits, their is no way the Fallen would have accepted such a trade-off if they hadn't just lost their previous source of vitality; the Traveller's Light acts in the same way as Ether, albeit without the risk of death from deprivation. It is likely that the Fallen turned to Ether (and as a result of that, the Servitors) after they were abandoned by the Traveller in an event called the Whirlwind (not dissimilar to the Collapse). This is even hinted by the shape and resemblance the Servitors have to the Traveller. In conclusion, the Fallen are a race of sentient arachnids well adapted to low-gravity scenarios (possibly an effect of either prolonged muscular atrophy or a slightly smaller home world in comparison to Earth) that have developed a biological-need for the Ether substance as a replacement for Light, explaining the various sizes found in the Fallen species.
