Thoughts on weekly requiring DLC

UPDATE Activision says its just this week and that the first week DLC comes out this may happen. Would have been smarter to say this BEFORE making such a drastic decision. Corporate communications 101 - Prevention is always better than reaction. -- Original post below -- Logged on to the app this morning to check out the new gear from vendors including Eris and legendaries then look at the weekly nightfall and heroic. Quite surprised it is the new DLC Omnigul strike. Yes, it came out yesterday and they want many of us to buy it BUT weeklies are the only guaranteed way to earn strange coins! While I understand the desire to promote the DLC, it seems unfair to remove an option that has become ingrained in the Destiny economy, worse with needing the coins to upgrade exotics at Xur this weekend (everyone wants a stronger gun even if they don't have the DLC). I was planning to get the DLC anyway but I feel like I'm being unfairly punished this week for not getting it yet. Am I alone on this or am I taking strange coins too seriously and should just go shoot some Hive?

  • I'm relieved to see an intelligent conversation in here about this topic. I've been in the Main Forums today reading through all the backlash about this, and most intelligent posts are met with "Buy the DLC. It's Only $20 Cheapskate" Can't say I'm surprised of course. I bought DLC, so it doesn't really affect me. But I still feel the need to stick up for those who haven't and find themselves missing out on strange coins this week. I agree, players who bought DLC should be rewarded with options to play the new strikes. But penalizing players who haven't forked up the cash is a really shitty way to implement the DLC content. Any Add on packs should be simply that. Add On Packs. They add to the current game, not replace things. Its not just about buying DLC either. In my eyes its about Long Term Scaleability and character progression. At Level 26-27, those strikes and nightfalls really help people to progress to lvl 28 and 29. If which each new DLC they remove the lower level and make the Weekly/Nightfall higher level, then we'll end up with a massive gap between lvl 24, and say lvl 36. All of a sudden they'll be no weekly activities to earn rewards for lvl 26/27 players.

    • I'm have mixed feelings about it. Personally I think there should be two play lists for the weekly stuff. One for DLC and one without. I don't think it's right to block people from game content that they've paid for in the original game. However I bought the DLC and have access to the weeklies so on a personal note I don't really care. If people want to play then they gotta pay and pay and pay. I look at it like any other company that I do business with. If they do stuff that I don't agree with or they offer bad services I just cut my losses and move on.

    • Like it. Adds to the strike rotation. Nightfall drops nice loot too and radiant shards/energy. If you at and like the game you should buy the DLC and even if you don't like the game slot of ppl bought premium editions of the game that includes the DLC already.

    • I think it's absolutely disgusting that they've done this. So really if you don't have the dlc the game is about as much use as a chocolate teapot now. I have a friend who at the moment can't afford to buy the dlc because he has a home and family and with Christmas round the corner money is a bit tight. To be honest I think that they'll lose quite a lot of people playing the game now and I don't blame them either because I sure as hell wouldn't want to play. Rant over sorry lol.

      • These things are expected with this kind of game. It is unfortunate really but as the game evolves you will only see more of this. Come Fall 2015 I would expect a Destiny bundle with the first two expansions included as well as more DLC on the way following that carrying us through the release of Destiny 2 in 2016.

      • Put it simple, why allow level 30 nightfalls/weeklies that have a chance to drop the new gear be available to non dlc player, so you want 2 games? 1 with pre dlc content and one with post dlc content. So you want to keep running weeklies for strange coins to buy exotics you won't be able to access, the vendors are selling the new stuff but you want to be able to run the old content and buy the new upgrades with out buying the content??? Yes it's frustrating if you don't have the dlc but the game has moved forward in its offering if you want that bonus shiny new stuff then buy the dlc.

      • Ok, I get the frustration somewhat. Yes they removed parts of the game that you could play before. But if you have level 30's and do not have the DLC, what were you planning on playing? Pre DLC once you hit 30, what else was there to do really? Raid for more weapons? This is the whole point of an evolving game, your characters has to keep evolving with the game. For the past few weeks, I have not had much to really do. The DLC is the way you level up your character, whether through drops, factions etc. I just don't understand those that do not have the DLC, and expect to stay current in the game.

I to love to get strange coins from weekly, but this week you're probably not missing out on many. I purchased the DLC months ago but still can't run the weekly. You have to complete a quest chain for Eris before it unlocks. I did a few last night and still haven't unlocked weekly. One of my quests is to purchase a urn from Xur, so that isn't happening until Friday. Who knows how many other quests are after that. I need to do some research. That is just on one character, so I will be lucky to run a weekly on just one character this week.

          • I usually think as a glass half full person would, I think bungie is simply rewarding or thanking those that did purchase the DLC. I truly don't think they look at it as punishing those who didn't buy or couldn't afford it. As a person who does not have much time for raiding as well I only have one character and only at lvl 29. I'm excited about being able to lvl to 32+ and do the Venus and DLC raid without having to do and get lucky on the raid to do the raid (sounds a bit twisted?). The new story missions are challenging as well I am lucky to be a part of a large group so I was able to get a couple a dods together to do the new missions on heroic mode. Sorry that went into a bit of a rant

            • Difficult one to handle I guess. If the DLC strikes are not included then those who have it suffer. The problem comes when finding friends to help complete them if they don't have the same DLC as you... Not impossible to do as they effectively block those who are not at a high enough level for raids. But it would become a nightmare to handle as more DLC comes out and the player-base fragments as to who has which DLC parts etc., so I guess the situation will only get worse as time goes on. So conclusion is that this issue will become worse and a different solution to getting strange coins needs to be added.

              • It was going to happen this weekend or next. They have to put it in the rotation. I am also curious how Xur will work out this weekend...Like some have said you cant punish the people that bought it either. In my eyes this game never has anything that is perfect in it and this is another example. As long as they keep trying to expand the experience I will keep coming back to play it. I definitely take weeks off and play other stuff. It seems to lower some of the frustration.

                • I can see why they did it, got to promote the new content, so I'll let it slide. Now, if this a permanent deal, I'll be much more upset. Not everyone is planning on getting the DLC anytime soon, or in some cases, at all. LIke David states, it has become part of the weekly routine...do the weekly, nightfall, then every thing else. Guess we'll have to wait and see until next week...

                • I'm just shocked the lv28 difficulty is gone. I kinda get it but now it goes lv24 to lv28 strike playlist and the weekly and nightfall are 30? The daily goes from 24 to 30? Myself and my strike team are 28/29 so doesn't effect us But man... What about someone at lv24-26? You grind out lv24 strikes for 4+ weeks to get new light gear to hit lv28? Then another several weeks before you can do nightfall?
