need some dadvice - nail biting and toddlers, your solutions?

Hi guys I have a bit Of a dilemma, my daughter is almost two and has taken to the want to bite her finger nails quite frequently and it's causing a few problems. She's made one Or two nails really short which in turn has caused them to hurt which then makes her cry. What solutions have you found to remedy this with your kids? And any solutions are welcomed or products I can buy to help solve this dilemma would be much appreciated. As you're likely aware I'm in the uk so anything that can be bought here will be good to know :-) Kp

  • There used to be a disgusting tasting (but non toxic, obviously) clear nail varnish called "stop n grow" . It worked on our little cherub. You could also try cutting her nails low so that there's little to bite ???

  • I've done the Tabasco thing as well. Also, you could try tape. My folks did it with my brother after Tabasco and vinegar didn't work. You just tape the tips of their fingers every time you catch her biting. It worked on him, but I didn't want yo tape my boys fingers, he'd have eaten the tape...

  • Keep her nails trimmed short bud - it's really the only long term solution in my opinion. :) Failing that, you could always tape gloves on her hands. Kids being kids though, she would have the gloves off and be biting again in ten minutes.

  • Our boy had the same issue. We just stick to the truth and tell him what might happen if he bites his nails like bellow... Nail biting is also related to oral problems, such as gingival injury, and malocclusion of the anterior teeth.[2][5] It can also transfer pinworms or bacteria buried under the surface of the nail from the anus region to the mouth.[2] When the bitten-off nails are swallowed, stomach problems can develop.[5] Each child is different but letting our son know of the bacteria and pinworms he's putting in his moth and how he can get very sick from it usually works.

  • Hi mate You can get something called oil of cloves in asda or tesco. Its like a nail polish to stop kids biteing nails. My son was chewing them so bad they got infected. Oil of cloves worked a treat and now he has stopped. RebelSaracen

  • Our 4 year old is doing the same, we've just been proactive about keeping fingernails short and reminding/asking him not to bite which seems to be working as it's becoming less frequent. Failing that we'll be put tape/band aids on to cover then up.

  • In case Tabasco doesn't work, hit up the rooster sauce (sriracha). Mmm mmm

  • My oldest son weren't through that stage the Dr had us use Tabasco sauce on his fingers when we noticed him doing it. Only took two applications and he stopped. When our daughter started to do that we had a different dr and the Tabasco didn't work because she loved it.the new dr just had us trim her nails often and she stopped biting them. Don't know if that will help but that was our experience with nail biting. Good luck
