This is ridiculous and I'm struggling to see how this even happens. Where's the public interest argument?
A 17 year old and a 15 year old are in a relationship. One turns 18 and suddenly she's arrested? This is grade A stupidity, unenforceable and someone selectively applying the law in response to parents angry that their daughter prefers other girls. Honestly, how many parents would have done this to an 18 year old boyfriend?
-
Sexpotato deems all sex to be exceptable this is a grave grave offense.
-
As far as I know it's not illegal to date a minor, it's just illegal to engage in sexual activity with a minor. So, what's the problem?
-
18 year old guy dating a 15 year old girl? Probably quite a few parents would've done that...
-
Justified.
-
There should be a buffer zone for that, like if one is a minor, the other one has to be at least 5+ years older for it to be a crime
-
Hey look, homophobia and prudishness wrapped into one!
-
Must have been harlol and gay

Edited by Jaevric: 5/24/2013 6:08:26 AMThis case is rapidly becoming more complicated. NYT reports that the relationship began when Kaitlyn Hunt was already 18. In light of the new information NYT reported regarding the case and plea bargain offered, the plea is a great option.

Genders and sexuality aside, it really is stretching the age gap for an 18 year old to be with a 15 year old, or a 17 year old with a 14 year old. I can't say I'm in support of the older girl in that case.

Edited by Siffera: 5/23/2013 10:44:17 PMThe parents should be ashamed of themselves. (The ones that accused her, that is.)

I knew someone whose parents threatened to have her boyfriend charged with statutory -blam!- if he kept seeing their daughter. Also, they shouldn't convict for obvious reasons, even if I don't have a legal argument why.
-
Does statutory -blam!- only based on the age difference or that something happened? because there was nothing about not having consent? I don't know... I haven't seen parents arrest and 18 year old boyfriend but I've seen a lot force their kid to split up a relationship with one and vice versa with an 18 year old girlfriend. I mean I've had a friend get kicked out of her home for having a girlfriend but I mean they wouldn't arrest her...
-
>Florida Whelp, I think we found the problem here, folks
-
I remember when i was 18, there was a guy who was dating someone in high school, and her parents did this to him, and had him charged with statutory -blam!- or something. They really didn't like him. I'm not sure how that ended. He didn't go to jail or anything, so maybe they just threatened him and didn't charge him.
-
That's sucks.
-
I'm glad I kept my mask.
-
I feel like the fact that the 15 year old supports her girlfriend will make the courts throw the case out.
-
Same state that elected a tea party fucktard Not surprised if I am honest
-
The younger kid's parents are disgusting.
-
Yeah, this is basically 100% bullshit. Homophobe parents trying to get an innocent girl jailed for "turning their daughter gay" even though THAT IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE, AS IN, THAT NEVER HAPPENS, OH MY GOD, WHY ARE PEOPLE SO STUPID. I saw this before and almost posted it - you beat me to it.
-
What happened was, the two girls were under the age of consent, and it was fine. Then the older girl turned eighteen, while the other girl was still a minor, and now it wasn't fine. However, if the older girl had been 23 or under, and the younger girl 17 or older, that would also have been legally protected, even though it is still a case of an overage girl and an underage girl. So yeah, Floridian age of consent laws and statutory rape don't work.
