I will admit I was extremely tired last night and a bit overwhelmed after the whole thing with my friend but I guess it's all opinion. Some people do find suicide jokes funny and whatever so I guess I can't speak for everyone. This was just my opinion and I apologize if I sounded a bit preachy and trying to force my opinions down your throat.
Original post:
I just got done trying to talk someone out of commiting suicide. Apparently she was joking the entire time and she was only doing it "for good laughs."
Well, I hate to break it to you but it's not funny. Especially for people like me who actually care. Suicide is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly or as a joke.
Long story short, I got a message from a friend claiming to have swallowed pills and was ready to die. About an hour later and message after message of me trying to stay in communication with her and trying to get her to keep talking to me, I finally decided to request a welfare check. After she learned my dad was actually a cop and I was being serious, she basically told me she was joking and was only doing it for laughs.
And I know, "It's your fault, Sara. You know these people just want attention." I know. But I take this kind of stuff seriously. I always assume they're serious instead of passing it off as an attempt to get attention because you know what? They could very well be serious and I'm not risking anyone's life for that.
To those people: stop. It really isn't funny and you get us worried sick.
To people making suicide jokes: stop. Telling people to "kys" or drink bleach or to hang themselves with a rope might seem funny to you but you don't know what the person is going through and again, it's not something to joke about.
Anyways, I hope everyone had a great day and whatever you're going through it's never the end of the world. And I'm always here if you ever want to talk about anything at all.
❤ LG
In my opinion, it's fine if you only do it to close friends and are just joking like, "Too bad you didn't burn in a grease fire" Something like NITW did was fine.
Night in the Woods for those wondering.
Suicide jokes are funny. Most of the time people just leave them hanging for comedic effect,

Suicide jokes are sometimes funny get over it

i do have to ask. why the public thing?

Ok ok, suicide jokes can be funny but it depends on the joke and possibly who's telling it. Saying that you're gonna go through with it yourself and then claim it as a joke is just a bit of a dick move. Either that or a call for help, some people might try to pass something off as a joke but have instead just used it to test the waters to see what someone might do in that certain situation. Though I believe your friend was just being a dick in this instance, it may be an idea to keep eyes on just in case...

But I like necking myself everytime I make a anime reference with my friends

You're right they're not funny. They are hilarious.

Speaking for myself, I have an appreciation for dark humour. Call me sick, or jaded, both titles fit. Me and my friends often share jokes that would be horribly offensive if overheard outside our clique, but that's just how we are. Sometimes it escalates to sickeningly high levels of disturbing as we one up one another - but I digress. Dark humour has its place. It can be purely for the shock value, or to further bind folks through common tastes, or simply as a coping mechanism for tough situations. It's knowing when and with whom to partake in such behaviour that becomes most indicative of character and maturity. As the world becomes less tolerable of jokes told in poor taste in the name of political correctness, there is a definite correlation to the use and level of harshness in these jokes. Nothing is sacred in pursuit of a good laugh, indeed it never has been. A poorly timed joke said to the wrong person can have any number of consequence, however, and this should perhaps be considered before telling them. Unless you're just a total ass, in which case just do as you do and don't cry about getting slapped out for being a complete tw@ to the wrong person.

I'm fine with the silly jokes when they're a response to first world problems but when it comes to tricking a bunch of people, it's not funny. That's not a funny shitpost, Facebook post, Tumblr, Twitter, whatever. It's not funny because it's really not a good joke/prank whatsoever. It doesn't make people laugh and it doesn't give anyone but who's in on it a good time. What's the finish anyways? "Lol I was kidding, I'm still alive."
btw, because it's a sensitive subject does not nullify humor. Being a sensitive subject can be why someone finds it not funny when used in response to first world problems. It's not funny because it's just not funny. What's so humorous about a shitpost about taking pills, slitting wrists, etc.? Nothing. If anything reading a post about suicide triggers our empathy/sympathy response. To help and protect each other. It doesn't trigger our suspicion response of "Wait a minute, are you tricking me?" And that's what kills the humor. You're not gaining our curiosity in a fun, interested way but a mother/father response to protect and help.
Well, same about cancer jokes, you may joke now, but when your grandma has cancer, you'll want to punch these people in the face.

I can understand where you are coming from. While I interned with an investigative team, I got to go to the sight of a suicide, and it was sad. Damn near overwhelming. My boss told me that the first one is always sad to see and they do not get better. You have to develop a defense against it or the sadness will overwhelm you. For some on the team, they focused on work, others coped by turning to religion and prayer, then there are those who use humor (never in front of the victim's family). While suicide is no joke and should never be trivialized, the sheer sadness of seeing a person who died with no hope, no dreams, and no will to press on can drive a person insane. Let them have their fun. It may be the only way they can cope.

Sounds like your, strung up in talking your opinions. Haha Get it? Strung up, as in string by a noose? No? Okay then, I need directions to the door.

Give me 13 reasons why.

Edited by Treebeard: 4/5/2017 4:56:29 PMI agree. I prefer Holocaust jokes. Edit: Holy shit, you guys are dark. I like it.

One two punch lines are funny, not fake texts.
-
Most crude jokes aren't funny unless you look at them as a joke. I get how it can be annoying and all. It's just a matter of perception.
-
that kind of suicide jokes are not funny. a one two punch line are.
-
I was about to make a shit post, until I've read it all. Yes, it's not something we should be joking at. But the way people put it, or how we are, sometimes you just can help it.

Edited by Iyrha: 4/4/2017 3:13:48 AMSuicide jokes are only funny when accompanied by adorable, animated girls.
Not actually telling you to kill yourself btw. Just an example.

Kidding, suicide jokes are always funny (still not telling you to kill yourself though, plz no ban).
