Need help with gear progression

So i've been playing the game since TK has come out but i'm still a bit confused about the gear progression in this game. At the moment I still have some quests to compleet so I'll just keep doing those, but after that what should I do to be able to start the raid(s)? At the strikes I get mostly blues that I already have or better, and can't start heroic strikes just yet. And is the faction gear any good? (Just wondering for when I get the required rank)
