Living Universe?
What are the properties of this "living universe" that bungie has called it?
If I go into a mission with a group of friends, and there are already people playing the mission before me, wouldn't that effect how many bad guys I get to face or would the progress have already been progressed.

I believe they mean a living universe in the sense of an MMO. Each mission may act like an individual instance.
