A California venture capitalist says the state is too big to govern - so he wants to split it up.
The San Jose Mercury News says Tim Draper is proposing a voter initiative calling on Congress to split the state into six regions. One would be called Silicon Valley and include the Bay Area and even Monterey.
Other folks might find themselves living in the states of South California, Central California and Western California. The wine country would be folded into North California and the far north would become Jefferson - a state first proposed in the 1940s.

While it's highly unlikely to pass, I do find this very interesting.
Should California be split up into multiple states? What could the possible benefits or problems be?

I've always wondered what it would be like to gerrymander an entire state....

Nothing is going to help that joke of a state. Maybe if they legalized cannabis first but now they're too late.
-
This would be good There's plenty of Republicans that are fed up with the state government but can't afford to move.

I hate my state. Sigh.

Why is always California that's to large to be governed? Texas and Alaska are much larger, but no one ever wants to split them into into a bunch of smaller "more manageable" states.
It's a ploy to break up a major democratic voting block into smaller more manageable pieces so that the Republicans can win a few of them. The reason you don't see it with Texas at the moment is because it's largely a red state. However if it ever becomes blue like some political analysts believe it will you'll start seeing similar calls to break up Texas into smaller states too.
If we wait long enough, itll fall into the sea, or burn itself.

So your pretty much gerrymandering a whole state

We should just sell Cali to China. You know the Chinese would really like a foothold on this continent, and would buy up Cali really quickly if it was put up for sale. Perfect for shipping routes and incorporating Silicon Valley into the Chinese business paradigm. They would probably pay whatever the asking price was too. I'm sure Californians would not like it initially, but they seem to accept whatever life hands them eventually. Losing Hollywood would probably be a good thing for the U.S.A. because what have they done for us to warrant their continued existence and protection lately? Nothing. Losing Silicon Valley would be a bigger problem, but a good portion of that is moving to Texas and Idaho now anyway, so they would recover. The big problem would be losing Cali's agricultural empire. That is far and away the most valuable thing in Cali's arsenal, and we would definitely miss that. Oh well. To make an omelet and all that.

lolno American states are already puny enough

I really don't see any purpose to this, but I can think of a couple problems that would result. The flags. All of the flags. So many new flags.

Edited by BACE: 12/24/2013 11:13:26 PMIf California does split I hope the northern state is called Jefferson, but I'm really unsure if it's the best of ideas for the state to split

Can we just get rid of Jerry Brown's dumbass instead?

It doesn't really need to split into several different states. Just divvy up the power between different administrative regions and have the existing government in an "oversight" function.
